For the tenth time in a row, Het Financieel Dagblad will present the annual FD Gazellen Awards in 2013 to companies in the Netherlands that have shown the fastest rate of growth. Any businesses that were able to show a growth in turnover of at least 20% during the financial years 2010, 2011 and 2012 are eligible to receive this prestigious Award.
The Rompa Group in Tilburg has also been nominated for the FD Gazellen Award. With a workforce of 750 and a current annual turnover of € 35 million, this company is a leading supplier of plastic components, packaging, trays and product assembly to Philips, Bosch, Siemens and many other globally operating companies. The presentation for the Brabant/Limburg region will take place on 26 November 2013 and the chosen venue is Driessen HRM in Helmond. A coversation with Patrick Gerard, director/joint owner of the Rompa Group.
“We are of course delighted with this nomination,” says Patrick Gerard, “although you have to meet quite a few requirements regarding growth of turnover, private capital, working capital and payment behaviour.
In recent years our organisation has indeed grown very fast, primarily due to the purchase of Technoplast, the construction of a new production hall in the Czech Republic, and the establishment of 2 new production companies in China: Rompa Chengdu and Rompa Shanghai”.
Production began in 1881 when the Rompa family started up a business to produce leather goods. When Philips began making electric razors, Rompa was asked to provide leather cases for them and some time later these were produced in plastic. In 1960, the company started with injection molding and thermoforming. In 1997, Rompa Hong Kong was established and at that time they supplied molds for the manufacture of plastic products. In 2005, a joint venture was set up with a Chinese company in Jiangmen, just over the border from Hong Kong, and Rompa-Shunxing was created. Also in 2005, Rompa took over a plastics company in the Czech Republic through which a foothold in Eastern Europe was gained and where there is now a new factory: Rompa CZ s.r.o. In 2006, as a result of another joint venture Rompa-Indepack LLC in Oregon USA was established, and in 2008, Technoplast in the Netherlands was taken over.
With the establishment of Rompa Shunxing, Rompa Chengdu, Rompa Shanghai, Rompa CZ s.r.o and by closing down production in the Netherlands, all manufacturing carried out by the Rompa Group has been transferred abroad.
Rompa the Netherlands
“Most projects are managed from the Rompa Holding in Tilburg and this is where we also do the engineering, the calculations and the sales. Working at our foreign production companies we also have skilled, experienced teams who are active in tooling, quality, project management and process engineering. One important aspect is that for all our production activities we are both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, and we are also ISO-TS certified for the automotive industry”, says Patrick Gerard. “All enquiries from our Dutch and Western European customers come in to Tilburg, but we also carry out the feasibility studies and maintain contact with customers.”
He continues: “The structure that we have set up in this way has proved to be successful. Not only have we experienced considerable growth in the past 3 years, but the concept has also turned out to be profitable. It was unfortunate that in 2008 we had to close down our production facilities in Terheijden due to the recession and to the fact that an important customer relocated to the Far East. This created the impression that things were no longer going very well for the Rompa Group, but in fact this could not have been less true. We have been thoroughly investigated by KPMG The Netherlands, a leading auditing and advisory service provider, and this has now resulted in the nomination for the FD Gazellen Award.”
The Gazellen Awards are organised annually by Het Financiële Dagblad together with Graydon, ABN AMRO and KPMG in five regions of the Netherlands. The presentation of the Awards to a number of nominees in the Brabant/Limburg region will take place during a festive event on 26 November this year, and the chosen venue is Driessen HRM in Helmond. “If we do not receive the Award, then we will still remain pleased and proud that we belong to the group of healthy, innovative businesses who have experienced the fastest growth in the Netherlands. A sign that we are on the right path to a successful future!”, says a very satisfied Patrick Gerard.
